Following the success of the Ambition Debate, which saw Independent Women bringing together 60 of the most interesting, influential, dynamic and talented people around to determine what Ambition really looks like for Women in 2011 and beyond, by means of a top-level panel forum debate at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London - we're delighted to bring you a synopsis of the outcomes from the day...
Why Hold this Event?
Following much discussion about the paucity of numbers of women on FTSE 100 and 250 Executive and Non-Executive Boards, and the Davies Report in 2011 which was commissioned to investigate the position and make recommendations as to how the UK can improve these numbers, at Independent Women we feel a responsibility as an organisation to look at how and where we can support women to live their lives to the full and to achieve whatever they desire. Whether or not it is career orientated, there is always a financial aspect to making dreams a reality and we can help make that work.
What Does Ambition look like for women?
We were keen to extend this debate beyond Davies; ambition can mean a whole host of things to people and is not just focused around vertical advancement within an organisational (specifically corporate) hierarchy. We were keen to broaden the discussion as far as it needed to go, but hoped not to focus too much on quotas or on childcare. However, entirely understandably, these issues were there and needing to be talked about.

What Next?
There was agreement that this stimulating debate should lead somewhere, and that this group of like-minded women, who have vastly different experiences and networks but share simliar values should meet again to discuss other stimulating topics and do business amongst the group.
It was also agreed that an e-petition be set up on the subject which, on receiving 100,000 signatures, will be eligible for debate in the House of Commons. Karen Darby, one our our fantastic panellists, has set this up - and you can find it here: Women on Boards e-Petition
