Mr Khan's responsibilities include leading and coordinating PwC's Islamic finance practice in the UK and collaborating with its global Islamic team.

Mohammad Faiz Azmi, global Islamic finance leader for PWC, said: "The UK market is an important one to Islamic finance players and his appointment ensures the continuity of our commitment to this market.

Scott Mackintosh, director for Edinburgh-based Independent Women, said: "It is a positive move to explore opportunities in the Islamic market. Also, as there is a growing Islamic population in the UK, it is only right that they get the specialist advice they need.

"While it is not an area we are active in at the moment, I have heard that that Islamic funds have been performing very well."
