Lord Davies today (24.2.11) produced his report into the issue of how best to get more women onto boards of UK companies. He has shied away from implementing government quotas (such as we see in other European countries like Norway) but ploughed a middle ground by suggesting voluntary targets - to increase the proportion of women on boards to 25% for all companies in the next 2 years. It's a heated debate - "I'm now completely in favour of quotas," said Anna Ford, the former broadcaster who sits on the boards of J Sainsbury and N Brown. "I think women have waited long enough. We're half the population, we're not a disabled racial minority. We're 52 per cent of the population and I think quotas are the only way forward now because I've been waiting for this for 40 years." Though others, such as Julie Meyer of Ariadne Capital argue that "I don't subscribe to things like targets and quotas because my whole life has been about building on rational self-interest." http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/1158b878-3f85-11e0-a1ba-00144feabdc0.html#ixzz1EsqZNQUR
